Hong Kong Tri Series Review

Hong Kong were victorious in the 2026 Hong Kong tri-series against Malaysia and China, winning the final by 28 runs and remaining undefeated throughout the entire tournament.

Both China and Malaysia won just a single match each, both defeating each other, but Malaysia progressed to the final by virtue of a superior net run rate.

The tournament was an opportunity for all three teams to fine tune their skills before embarking on the Asia Games Qualifiers in Kuala Lumpur in late May.

Key Findings

Hong Kong

Hong Kong were at their clinical best throughout the tournament, but one would have expected this given the disparity in rankings. Hong Kong are ranked 23rd and were playing teams with rankings over forty. Still, one can only play the teams that are listed to play.

The pleasing thing for the home team was the consistency of the toup four batters, particularly skipper Natasha Miles and Yas Daswani who dominated the series with 240 and 193 runs respectively. Daswani was in particularly good form and that’s a continuation of her great consistency over the last 18 months. She finished with a strike rate of 109.03 which was the highest of any top order batters in the tournament.

Kary Chan was in vintage form with the ball – she took 5-15 against Malaysia on day three – and was named Player of the Tournament.

Malaysia

A continuation of a downward trend evident over the last two years and the team only made the final courtesy of their better run rate than China, but making the final on the back of a single victory is nothing to sing about.

A half century to Mas Elysa was the only batting highlight and her 92 runs, the best for Malaysia, shows just how poor this team is performing with the bat at present.

The bowlers had a better time of it, with Mas Elysa taking 7 wickets, while Mahirah Izzati was quite consistent with the ball. That said, there is much to do to bring this team up to the standard they displayed two years ago if they are to achieve success in the Asia Games Qualifiers.

China

Despite finishing last, China actually performed very well and only just missed the finals. They were particularly good in the field, ably led by captain Mingyue Zhu who was responsible for a number of runouts, mostly from direct hits. The wicket keeper, Jiang Chunquin, was also a standout in the field for China.

Mingyue Zhu was China’s leading batter with 103 runs and was also an important figure with the ball. One player to watch will be fast bowler, Ma Ruike who had some inspired spells through the series. All in all, China had a good tournament and it augers well for them for the Asia Games Qualifiers.
