Born on 27th December 1914 in Palmerston North, Manawatu, former Test player for New Zealand, Hilda Buck.
Hilda faced the very first delivery in Test cricket for New Zealand, opening the batting with Margaret Marks at Lancaster Park in Christchurch in February 1935. Betty Archdale’s England were visiting for a single Test match after their debut series against Australia.
Hilda has two other “firsts”. She is the first New Zealand woman to be dismissed in a Test match and also the first to score a duck. She had a better time of it in the second innings, scoring 16. That was Hilda’s only Test match. She continued to play for Wellington until 1945/6.
