On 21st June 2009 at Lords, England defeated New Zealand by six wickets to become the inaugural T20 World Cup winner.
Both teams finished on top of their pools and played second placed Australia and India in the semi-finals. New Zealand defeated India by 52 runs while England beat Australia by eight wickets.
Charlotte Edwards won the toss for England and invited Aimee Watkins and the White Ferns to bat first. Edwards threw the ball to young fast bowler Katherine Brunt and the young speedster didn’t let her down.
First wicket to fall was Suzie Bates, caught by Sarah Taylor behind off Laura Marsh. Then it was Brunt, Brunt, Brunt. Captain Edwards cleverly left her gun weapon on for four straight overs as she dismissed Watkins, Lucy Doolan and Rachel Priest to leave the Kiwi batting in tatters.
New Zealand never recovered from that onslaught and were bundled out for just 85 runs. Claire Taylor’s 39 not out helped England to win by six wickets to become the first ICC T20 Champions. Taylor was also named Player of the Tournament. Katherine Brunt was Player of the Match with 3-6 from her four overs.
